France employs rubbish collecting birds

A theme park in France is set to unveil six “intelligent” birds to pick up rubbish.
The birds are known as rooks, which are a type of blackbird. They have been taught to collect cigarette ends and other small bits of rubbish at the Puy du Fou theme park.
They then deposit the litter into a small box which will deliver some bird food as a reward for their hard work.
The first feathery cleaners have already been put to work, with the rest set to join them on Monday.
Nicolas de Villiers, the head of the park, said that it was not just about keeping the area clean.
It was also about showing “that nature itself can teach us to take care of the environment”

Missing cat returns after 13 years

A missing cat has returned to its home after 13 years.
Tabby cat Boo vanished from her owner Janet Adamowicz’s home in Harrowgate, West Yorkshire, in 2005 at the age of four.
Janet, a married step-mum-of-two, was heartbroken when her pet went missing. She stuck posters to lampposts in the area, desperate for someone to spot her.
Now, Boo has returned home after living as a stray for 13 years.
Boo was taken to the vets in East Yorkshire by an unknown woman and scanned for a chip.
The chip was registered to Janet – who couldn’t believe it when they rang her and asked about a missing cat

Blood moon visible from New Zealand

New Zealand got a short glimpse at the longest lunar eclipse of the century on Saturday morning.
The blood moon lasted for one hour and 43 minutes.
The moon began to enter earth’s shadow (known as the penumbra) around 5.15am.
The moon appears red (rather than in complete darkness) due to blue light from the earth’s atmosphere refracting sunlight onto the surface of the moon.
No glasses are needed for the lunar eclipse due to its dimmer colour.
New Zealand only had a partial eclipse, but most of Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and South America had a total eclipse.

Boeing building new plane that flies five times the speed of sound

magine going to Los Angeles or London for a weekend or even a day trip?
Well, Boeing is is working on a super-speed, ‘hypersonic’ plane capable of travelling at a velocity five times the speed of sound.
The plans say it could fly at up to 6500km/h.
At that speed the flight from Auckland to Los Angeles would only be an hour and a half ….. Wellington to London? Just THREE hours.
Boeing chief hypersonic scientist Kevin Bowcutt said the plane will be revolutionary for global travel.
“We’re excited about the potential of hypersonic technology to connect the world faster than ever before,” he said.
The aircraft would be capable of carrying passengers at full speed, though Boeing said it would also be used commercially or for the military.
Dr Bowcutt said it is possible this design could become a reality within 20 to 30 years.

Wildfires in Greece

At least 50 people are feared dead in wildfires burning in Greece. The fires have hit the Attica region around Athens, the capital of Greece.
It is Greece’s worst fire crisis in more than a decade.
As part of a huge rescue effort, emergency workers used boats and helicopters to evacuate a beach.
“We will do whatever is humanly possible to control it,” Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told reporters.
Tsipras has declared a state of emergency in Attica, saying “all emergency forces” had been mobilised.
His government has asked other European countries for helicopters and additional firefighters to help tackle the fires.
Italy, Germany, Poland and France have all sent help in the form of planes, vehicles and firefighters.

What caused the fires?
Fires are a recurring problem during the hot, dry summer months in Attica. The flames this week were fanned by high winds.

When we did art we started by drawing the cats, then the fence, the pumpkin and lastly we drew the sky. Once we drew the outline of the painted, we started painting. The first part we painted was the sky, and then the fence. Once they had dried we painted the pumpkins. After that we had to draw the cats again and painted those black. Before we did the painting we did a piece of writing. My writing was called 'A Cat's Moment in Time'.
